AP English Literature and Composition is a course designed to present students with college-level work, focusing on literary analysis and analytical writing, as described in the College Board’s course description materials. The course seeks to cultivate in students a more conscious awareness of their own response to literature, which will lead into an increasingly sophisticated interpretation of the literature. Understanding how authors use language to convey ideas in powerful ways will lead students to an appreciation of artistry and excellence in literature. Students will come to see that great literature transcends time and place because it speaks to the human condition. Writing to understand and writing to explain are key components of the course as well. Students will write personal responses, reflective pieces, analytical essays and researched reports relating to the literature they read. Timed in-class writing will help students prepare for that part of the AP Exam in May. Class discussions are also important aspects of understanding and will play a vital role in the course.
