Materials used in the Advanced English 8 course are designed to teach truths that will produce, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional growth in our lives.  In this class, student will work to master the written use of the English language, expand vocabulary, conduct grammatical analysis, practice public speaking, and dig deeply into numerous advanced literary works including Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, Light in the Forest, and Children of the River,  as well as works by  Jack London, Anton Chekhov, Maya Anjelou, and Nikki Giovanni.  Writing exercises will include in class papers, creative writing, research report writing and poetry.  Grammatical analysis will continue to cover sentence patterns, verbs and auxiliaries, compound sentences and their elements. By the end of 8th grade, students should be able to write an organized five paragraph essay containing a clear thesis statement, well-structured development, transition sentences and a relevant conclusion paragraph in a variety of writing  formats, including informative, persuasive, and expository. Class discussions will help students practice critical thinking skills and analysis by putting their thoughts into clear spoken words that effectively communicate their ideas in preparation for high school.
